THE DNA OF SPANISH PEOPLE
12th October 2024Spaniards share more genetic similarities with Norwegians than with North Africans, despite centuries of Moorish domination.
The influence of the Moors on culture and society has been considerable, but genetic research shows that their heritage is minimal. Andalusians, for example, have only 6% North African haplogroups, while the majority of their genetic material corresponds to that of Northern Europeans. This shows that cultural influence is not always accompanied by genetic inheritance, and that migration from other parts of Europe during and after the Reconquista had a greater impact on the genetic composition of the Spanish population.
