STRANGE PHONE CALLS

Be cautious with phone calls in Spain where someone tries to make you say “yes” or “sí”.

More and more people are receiving these calls, and according to Spain’s National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), it may be an attempt to record your voice for future fraud, such as opening bank accounts or signing contracts in your name.

A simple recording of the word “yes” is usually not enough to commit fraud, but the danger lies in combining it with other personal information obtained through data leaks or phishing. This allows scammers to build a convincing identity and exploit voice recognition systems. With today’s artificial intelligence, voices can be cloned with just a few seconds of audio, meaning your “sí” could be used to create a digital copy of your voice.

To stay safe, never say “yes” during unexpected calls from unknown numbers. Hang up and verify through your bank’s or provider’s official channels whether the call was genuine. Never share personal or financial details with someone who calls you.

Check your bank accounts regularly and report any suspicious activity immediately. This way, a simple “yes” won’t turn into a big problem.
