18th July 2025Tanorexia: the dangerous urge to tan
In Spain, the incidence of skin cancer is rising sharply. Yet many people, especially young people, continue to sunbathe or tan obsessively, a behaviour known as tanorexia.
Risks:
Increased risk of skin cancer (up to 35% with tanning bed use).
Rapid skin ageing (wrinkles, spots).
Psychological symptoms such as insecurity and anxiety.
Protect yourself in Spain:
Avoid the sun between 12pm and 4pm.
Use SPF 30+ every 2 hours (even when overcast).
Wear hat, sunglasses and covering clothes.
Avoid tanning beds completely.
Get your skin checked regularly.
Brown does not equal healthy.
Choose protection rather than damage.
Stay alert for tanorexia and seek help for persistent urges to tan.
