THE SIESTA AS MEDICINE

The siesta as remedy

Spanish doctors officially grant the siesta a medical status: it is not a sign of laziness, but an essential part of a healthy heart.

A new consensus document from Spanish internists and vascular specialists states that a midday rest of maximum 30 minutes is the perfect addition to the Mediterranean diet.

It helps with stress regulation, metabolism, and restoring the biorhythm.

The lesson? It is not just about what is on your plate (olive oil, fish, vegetables), but also about the rhythm around it.

Eating together, taking time, and a short rest after lunch form a powerful shield against modern diseases. Timing is important: do not sleep longer than half an hour, otherwise night sleep is disrupted and you wake up groggy. The Mediterranean lifestyle is, in short, not a diet, but a culture of rest and social contact.
