The Metamorphosis of Málaga Airport: 1.5 Billion for Comfort and Speed

Those who regularly travel via the Costa del Sol have something to look forward to. Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is set to undergo a spectacular transformation in the coming years. With an investment budget of no less than 1.5 billion euros, the airport is being prepared for the future, with everything revolving around a smoother and more pleasant travel experience.

  • No more liquid bags and unpacking: The most tangible improvement for travelers will take place at security. Thanks to the implementation of advanced 3D scanners, the frustrating liquid rule will soon be a thing of the past. Passengers will be able to leave laptops, electronics, and liquids in their bags. This not only results in much less stress but also significantly speeds up the flow at checkpoints.
  • Space for millions of extra passengers: To accommodate the growing popularity of the region, the infrastructure is being drastically expanded:

    • Terminal expansion: The surface area of the terminal will grow from 80,000 m² to no less than 140,000 m².
    • Greater capacity: The airport will soon be able to welcome more than 36 million travelers per year (compared to the current 30 million).
    • Better flow: Extra gates, new check-in counters, and more modern baggage belts will shorten waiting times.
    • Specialization: A completely separate pier will be built for flights to countries outside the Schengen area (such as the United Kingdom).
  • Sustainability and planning: The renovation is not only focused on growth but also on responsibility. Under the banner of the national DORA III program, the Spanish government is investing in green innovations. For example, there is a strong focus on reducing CO₂ emissions and more efficient water management at the airport. The large-scale works are scheduled to begin in late 2028. Anyone flying from Málaga then can count on a hyper-modern gateway that symbolizes the new way of traveling on the Costa del Sol.
